Aromatherapy VS. Massage

**Massage/Tuina:**  

To obtain a massage license, you must complete studies at a massage school and pass government examinations. The total cost for massage school courses and the examination can be as high as $10,000, and the program typically takes 6 to 9 months to complete due to the complexity of the Chinese and English courses offered. 

After passing the exam, you will need to pay administrative fees to the state massage bureau to obtain your massage license. Additionally, purchasing liability insurance is essential to protect yourself in case of an accident at work.

It’s important to note that you can only work in the state where you are licensed. If you wish to work in another state, you may need to complete additional hours of study. Most states require an extra 150 hours of massage school training before they will approve you for a massage license.

Unfortunately, there are cases where individuals complete massage school and pay all associated fees but still fail to pass the licensing exam, which can result in wasted time, energy, and money. 

**Aromatherapy:**  

Aromatherapy involves light to moderate touch on the body, utilizing essential oils to achieve a healing technique that relaxes the body and alleviates fatigue and stress. 

It is crucial to avoid deep tissue massage techniques during aromatherapy sessions. Aromatherapy should not involve deep tissue, sports massage, or physical therapy methods. Only light to moderate pressure is to be applied, with no back walking or stretching of the client's body.

To become an aromatherapist, the process is much simpler and quicker; typically, you do not need more than six months of study. After submitting your application and payment, you can complete the entire certification process within 10 working days and receive your aromatherapist certificates. The cost for a set of Aromatherapy Certificates is $1,800 per person, which is significantly less than the expenses associated with obtaining a massage license.

There are no annual fees for the aromatherapist certificate, and it does not require renewal as long as it remains valid. With this set of certificates, you can work anywhere in the United States without incurring transfer fees, unlike a massage license.

Aromatherapy is not regulated by the government and does not require official permission. You can add aromatherapy services to any spa across the United States, work at any spa, or even start your own spa without limitations. However, if you're interested in providing deep tissue massage, sports massage, or physical therapy, you will need to obtain a state massage license.
